CPS ENERGY RELIABILITY PROJECT INCLUDES INSTALLATION OF NEW NATURAL GAS MAIN TO SERVE GROWING POPULATION NEAR LOOP 1604 AND IH 10 W

January 7, 2022 (San Antonio) – CPS Energy will begin construction on a new natural gas main being installed under Loop 1604 near IH-10 on the northwest side of San Antonio. Construction will require closure of the right lane along the IH-10 westbound frontage road to the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road starting Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

The proposed 16-inch gas main will be approximately 610 feet in length and is intended to increase natural gas service reliability and provide additional capacity for future customers. CPS Energy is coordinating installation of the gas main with a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) roadway improvement project to minimize ongoing impacts to drivers.

“To ensure the safety of motorists and crews, lane closures are sometimes necessary when we work to improve the reliability of our infrastructure,” said Richard Lujan, Interim Vice president of Gas Solutions for CPS Energy. “While we understand this will cause some disruption to normal traffic patterns, the project is key for reinforcing parts of our gas system in response to increased customer growth and improving the system’s resiliency during extreme cold-weather.”

CPS Energy plans to work around the clock to complete the project once the lane closure starts. The project is estimated to take 7 to 12 weeks depending on soil conditions, potential underground utility conflicts, weather, etc.  TxDOT digital message boards are installed in the area to alert drivers of the upcoming lane closure. Drivers are reminded of the Move Over, Slow Down law requiring them to move over for utility crews to ensure everyone’s safety.
