CPS ENERGY’S CASA VERDE WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM CELEBRATED MILESTONE

CPS Energy weatherized 30,000 homes to help customers save energy for lower utility bills

February 10, 2023 (SAN ANTONIO) – This morning, CPS Energy’s Casa Verde Program celebrated the weatherization of 30,000 homes throughout the San Antonio community. This program has changed the lives of many CPS Energy customers, from lower utility bills to an increase in comfort in their homes, especially during hot summers and cold winters.

To highlight this impactful program, CPS Energy and the City of San Antonio came together to celebrate this Casa Verde milestone and learn about the work that was done to the 30thousandth home in the Far West Side of San Antonio.

“Casa Verde is focused on equity and lowering the energy burden amongst the most vulnerable residents which aligns with our Vision 2027 mission of serving our customers equitably,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. “Today we celebrated the weatherization of 30,000 homes but remain committed to continue the growth of this critical program to help our customers.”

The Casa Verde Weatherization program helps income-qualifying homeowners and renters reduce energy loss and costs with free energy efficiency improvements. Participants receive on average $4,500 in free home weatherization improvements, saving approximately $450 a year in energy costs. CPS Energy plans to invest $82.5 million in Casa Verde to weatherize up to 16,000 homes and 20,000 multifamily units over the next 3-5 years.

Casa Verde participants receive an energy assessment of their home to determine what improvements will have the greatest impact on energy savings. Energy-saving measures may include attic insulation, wall insulation, solar screens, air-sealing measures, replacement of incandescent light bulbs with LEDs and duct sealing in addition to some health and safety measures.

Casa Verde is part of CPS Energy’s new Sustainable Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP). The STEP program’s goals include 410 megawatts (MW) of energy demand reduction, 1% energy savings per year system wide, and 1.85 million tons of avoided carbon. STEP’s award-winning energy efficiency and conservation programs received approval in 2022 for $350 million in funding over five years from our Board of Trustees and San Antonio City Council.  This plan includes community solar and other solar offerings for more low-to-moderate income customers; energy storage; electric vehicle (EV) charging; educational curriculum to promote behavioral changes towards energy conservation; demand response in the form of technology like smart thermostats both in homes and businesses; and support for the commercial sector to become more efficient through traditional energy efficiency rebates and other new programs.
