CITY OF SAN ANTONIO CREDIT OPT OUT FORM AVAILABLE FOR CPS ENERGY CUSTOMERS

H-E-B and USAA lead way in donating to CPS Energy’s Residential Energy Assistance Partnership with a combined $650,000

November 3, 2022 (SAN ANTONIO) – CPS Energy customers receiving a credit from the City of San Antonio can now opt out and donate the credit to help neighbors in need, and H-E-B and USAA are leading the way. H-E-B and USAA are opting out of credits due to their companies of $530,932 and $119,295, respectively, choosing instead to donate the credits to the Residential Energy Assistance Partnership (REAP).

“We want to thank H-E-B and USAA for their leadership in being the first companies to commit to donating their bill credits to REAP. Their support will help our shared customers and families in need. We continue to stand ready to help our customers through their challenging times and encourage anyone in need to submit applications to REAP. We will work with any qualifying residential customer to apply the additional assistance from the City credits to their accounts,” said DeAnna Hardwick, CPS Energy’s executive vice president of customer strategy.

“The City’s budget prioritized investing in our residents through energy credits, property tax relief and investment in key services that our residents expect and depend on. Thanks to the community-first mindset of our homegrown companies H-E-B and USAA, many more residents will receive assistance with their energy bills,” said City Manager Erik Walsh.

Other customers who want to opt out can complete a form available on CPS Energy’s website, visit a CPS Energy customer service center or call (210) 353-2222. The opportunity is available to customers who do not have a past due balance. Customers can help neighbors in need by selecting one of two options through REAP: 1) direct bill payment assistance; or 2) home weatherization, to include minor repairs.

The credit from the City of San Antonio is a result of recent action by the City Council. High natural gas prices, combined with the second hottest summer on record, resulted in extraordinary customer bills and revenues to the City that exceeded normal expectations. In recognition of the unusual additional revenues, City Council approved returning $50 million back to CPS Energy customers as part of the City’s Fiscal Year 2023 adopted budget. Customers will not need to do anything to receive the credit.

On December bills, all active CPS Energy electric customers will receive direct credits based, in part, on their July 2022 electric usage. In total, customers will receive $42.5 million which will be fairly credited to all CPS Energy electric customers in the same way it was collected with the average residential customer receiving a $29 credit. Customers choosing to opt out of receiving the credit must do so by January 15, 2023.

Residential customers who want to know the range of their credit can log into Manage My Account online by mobile phone or PC and view their July bill. The range of a customer’s credit will be based on their July electric usage in kilowatt hours (kWh) as shown below:

• Up to 1,000 kWh, credit up to $18
• 1,000 – 2,000 kWh, credit $18 – 36
• 2,001 – 4,000 kWh, credit $36 – 72

In approving the budget, City Council directed $7.5 million to REAP to help low-income customers with bill payment assistance. CPS Energy is also contributing a total of $3 million to REAP.
