CPS Energy giving away 1,200 trees to help customers save money

This Friday is Earth Day, and CPS Energy is getting more than a thousand trees ready to help you save money and energy now and for the future.

The City of San Antonio’s Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a Earth Day event full of interactive activities for the entire family at Woodlawn Park on Saturday, April 23, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

CPS Energy is proud to be a part of this year’s Earth Day celebration by partnering with Parks & Recreation to host a tree adoption. We will give away 1,200 trees – first come, first served – so San Antonians can do their part in making our environment healthier. Our team of employees will distribute the 1-gallon trees, tree guides, and supply bags at the event while supplies last.

Why should I adopt and plant a tree on Earth Day?

There are numerous benefits to planting a tree on your property. Trees are often considered an engineering miracle as they have mastered photosynthesis. This process combines water and salt from the earth with carbon dioxide from the air to produce the nutrients which feed the tree. Trees create shade, lower ambient temperatures, and ultimately save electricity for businesses, homeowners, and the community.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, carefully positioned trees can save up to 25% of a typical household’s energy, increase property value, and are essential to creating healthier environments.

We hope you can join us on Saturday to celebrate Earth Day. We will be located in the open field north of the tennis courts. For more information about the event and all of the scheduled activities, click here.

Can’t make it to the free tree giveaway? Try our Green Shade Rebate

CPS Energy also offers a Green Shade Tree Rebate for community members who purchase a qualifying tree. Following the steps below makes you eligible to receive a rebate:

  • Trees must be five gallons or larger and from the Qualified Species List on the application form. (You can purchase up to 5 trees)
  • Rebates of $50 for each eligible tree are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis—until program funds are exhausted.
  • There is a lifetime limit of five rebates per address.
  • Application must include a photocopy of the original sales receipt for trees purchased and a photocopy of a recent CPS Energy bill and be postmarked by 5/15/22.
  • For the 2021-2022 rebate, trees must be purchased between 10/1/21 and 4/30/22.

The $50 credit you get for buying the tree will appear on your CPS Energy bill within 12 weeks.

As a reminder, trees should be planted 20 to 30 feet away from your home. Also, before you start digging to plant your tree, call 811 so you do not hit an underground electric or gas line.

And, while you’re thinking of nurturing and enhancing your lawn, consider replacing any gas-guzzling lawn equipment with electric models. If you’re out and about on our main highways, you may have noticed our Mow Down Smog billboards announcing our rebate to cut your costs on electric lawn mowers, edgers, blowers and hedge trimmers. It’s another smart Earth Day move to improve air quality. See the details here.

Our commitment to the Earth is deeply rooted

CPS Energy is committed to being environmentally responsible and helping our customers protect San Antonio now and for future generations. We recycle tons of material and reuse 91 to 95 percent of all materials to protect the environment. We also provide more than 550 megawatts (MW) of waterless, emission-free solar power and have provided rebates to nearly 30,000 customers to put solar on their roofs. Those actions have led us to be proclaimed a Solar Superstar by Environment Texas in a report released earlier this week. Our community’s solar production is number one in Texas and fifth in the nation.
