CPS Energy Celebrates Summer Interns for National Intern Day

More than 40 local students immerse themselves in energy industry and helping customers

Students spend their summers in different ways. This year, 43 students spent their summer interning right here at CPS Energy. The internship program at CPS Energy is a vital part of the growth and development of future employees and our local workforce. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, San Antonio is one of the top-growing cities in the United States. Championing talent from our community and growing our workforce is essential to keep up with that growth and maintain reliable service to our customers.

To celebrate National Intern Day, CPS Energy is proud to highlight the summer interns that have chosen to spend their summer alongside our team learning more about the energy industry.

Connecting students with internship opportunities is not new for CPS Energy, in fact, we have been offering internships to students for close to 30 years! These internships are tailored to help high school and college students learn more about a career in energy by providing real-world experience and hands-on learning opportunities while expanding their knowledge of the industry.

This year’s CPS Energy summer internship program runs 10 weeks from June 5, 2023, through August 11, 2023. Interns are mentored by employees across the workforce in a variety of different departments. This year’s interns are spread throughout Power Generation, Customer Experience, Data Science, Cyber Security, Finance, Talent Development, Strategic Research, Legal, Supply Chain, Energy and Equity, Enterprise Information Technology (EIT) and Mail Services.

Cohen Skocny is interning with CPS Energy’s EIT department for the second year in a row. He just graduated from East Central High School and has gained valuable experience from his two summers at CPS Energy.

“I learn something new every single day at CPS Energy,” said Skocny. “The challenges I have encountered have helped me to grow professionally and personally and I have learned a lot about working hard towards my goals. Most important of all, I have grown my confidence in the knowledge I have about the EIT department. The internship has been invaluable. Every minute I have spent here I will be able to take and use in my future.”

The internship program not only provides hands-on experience for participants but also gives them opportunities and exposure to professionals in and around the industry.

CPS Energy offers internship programs throughout the year, with some resulting in the opportunity to join CPS Energy as a full-time employee. Kayla Berlanga was hired as a General Business Analyst in the Technology and Product Innovation department upon the completion of her Spring 2023 internship and graduation from Texas A&M University in College Station.

“The internship program that CPS Energy offers students is amazing,” said Berlanga. “My internship taught me about teamwork and provided me with a positive environment while helping the San Antonio community. I feel strongly that both my education from Texas A&M University and this internship opportunity have been crucial in allowing me to be a part of a thriving company such as CPS Energy and I look forward to a promising career here.”

We thank our summer interns and look forward to watching them succeed and contribute to the Alamo City!  More information on how to gain valuable experience or learn more about future internships and other career opportunities can be found on our website cpsenergy.com/careers
