SAN ANTONIO CITY COUNCIL CONFIRMS CPS ENERGY BOARD OF TRUSTEES NOMINEE DR. FRANCINE ROMERO

October 21, 2021 (SAN ANTONIO) –Today, San Antonio City Council confirmed the nomination of Dr. Francine Romero to the CPS Energy Board of Trustees from the Northwest Quadrant (1) of CPS Energy’s service territory. The confirmation follows a vote by the Board of Trustees on October 4, 2021 to submit Dr. Romero to the City Council for approval.

“Dr. Romero has extensive experience and an exceptional track record in serving our diverse community. Her leadership skills will benefit our Board as we make decisions that affect the future of this energy company that serves Greater San Antonio. I am looking forward to working with her,” said Board Chair Dr. Willis Mackey. “We received a significant amount of interest from our community in serving on the Board. I am pleased with the support and caliber of the applicants and am excited we found an exceptional nominee in Dr. Romero to help us meet the business and strategic needs of CPS Energy and our community.”

She is committed to upholding the public trust and exercising responsible fiscal stewardship to protect ratepayers,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “Dr. Romero is well prepared for a role on the CPS Energy board. She understands the importance of electricity issues and what they mean to the most vulnerable members of our city as well as our economy.”

Dr. Romero will fill the seat to be vacated by Trustee Ed Kelley, who has served two terms as a member of the CPS Energy Board.

Dr. Romero will join Board Chair Dr. Willis Mackey, Vice-Chair Janie Gonzalez, Trustee John Steen, and Mayor Ron Nirenberg on the CPS Energy Board of Trustees.

Dr. Romero has a long career in education. She is the Chair of the Department of Public Administration at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside, and a B.A. in Political Science, from California State University, San Bernardino.

Dr. Romero also has extensive experience in research and community service. She has received numerous awards and accolades to include:

  • San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame—2019 Inductee, Higher Education Category
  • San Antonio Clean Technology Forum, Water for Life Award—2017 Nominee
  • Green Spaces Alliance, Land We Love Gala—2016 Honoree
  • UTSA President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Community Service— 2013 Winner
  • Office of the United States Secretary of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Patriotic Employer Award—2013
