Mi Casa Makeover: changing lives one home at a time

By on October 16, 2013

For more than six years now, I’ve been lucky to be a part of a program that is life changing for many families in San Antonio.

I’m talking about the CPS Energy/KENS 5 Mi Casa Makeover— and this year we celebrated our 25th home makeover!

The Mi Casa Makeover program gives viewers an opportunity to nominate themselves or someone they know who they believe are deserving of a home makeover. Applicants mail in stories and photos of their home. Entries are read by a selection committee, who visit the families and make a decision on who will be the next winner.

As co-host of the show, I am humbled by the incredible people I’ve met over the years.  I’ve listened to many stories of people who became sick and were unable to maintain their homes, families with homes affected by natural disasters, and others who just needed a little help.

Meet our 25th winner, Samantha Robinson.

Today Samantha walks with a severe limp and uses her left hand to control her right hand.  Over time her home had become worn & neglected, but not by choice. So imagine what it was like for me and all the sponsors when we surprise her and her family with the news that they had won a CPS Energy/Mi Casa Makeover.

After three long months of waiting for the remodel to be completed, Samantha and her daughters were eager to see the new changes made to their home.

Their reactions were priceless.

You can’t have a makeover without a professional interior decorator, so we called on Rene Vinson Interiors.   Rene used her talents to create an inviting space the whole family could relax in and enjoy.

The Mi Casa Makeover is made possible by corporate sponsor CPS Energy. But the real heroes are the group of local sponsors who give their personal time, money and effort to remodel homes for the deserving winners.  They include Jon Wayne Heating and Air, Amazing Siding & Windows, Atlas Floors Carpet One, Texas Gallery Furniture, Home Depot, LGO Services, Mr. Appliance and The Grounds Guys Landscape and so many more.

Samantha and her daughters have moved back into their home and love it. I called her recently to see how things have been going. She is still floating on cloud nine.

“I still can’t believe this has happened to me and my girls,” she told me. “There are so many wonderful people that care. Mi Casa Makeover has changed my life.”

If you or someone you know is deserving of a home makeover visit, visit our Mi Casa Makeover page to fill out an application.  Good luck!

I’d like to nominate someone I’ve met… when I saw her post some pics of her beloved rescue animals, I noticed that she had covered all the windows in her house with plastic. Some of her comments about getting ready for the extreme low temps we had in the last few months concerned me. I did notice that the form asks for a driver’s license, but I have no way of learning it as I’m not a family member. Also, I’d like to remain anonymous to her in the event she is selected.

    Is this possible?
