A CPS Energy apparel vendor has informed the utility of a warehouse burglary that resulted in approximately 100 rain jackets with CPS Energy logos stolen. The thieves stole an assortment of objects from the warehouse to include tools, clothing and other items belonging to various companies throughout the area. All customers are encouraged to keep a vigilant watch for anyone posing as a CPS Energy employee. CPS Energy is offering a $2,500 reward for the return of the stolen jackets. Scam artists continue to target CPS Energy residential and commercial customers, demanding payment for their service. They have also been contacting customers to pay either a deposit or a full amount for switching out their current meter to a smart meter. If a customer refuses to pay, the scam artist threatens to disconnect services. The tactics are being used in scams nationwide.
“These crooks are targeting hard-working members of our community. Since they’re not giving up, neither are we,” said Shawn Eddy, who oversees CPS facilities, assets and security. “We ask our customers to continue to be observant and do business with us through known channels – by mail, online at cpsenergy.com or at a CPS Energy customer service center or authorized vendor.”
Customers should know that CPS Energy employees will:
NEVER charge a fee to switch out a meter.
NEVER threaten to disconnect service by phone or in-person.
NEVER ask for Green Dot or pre-paid cards.
NEVER call to request credit card or banking information.
NEVER ask to enter a home without a request for service or prior notification.
ALWAYS wear a badge with a photo and employee number.
If a customer is visited by someone posing as a CPS Energy representative, they should request to see the individuals badge and call the company’s Security Hotline at (210) 353-4000 to confirm that the individual is an actual CPS Energy employee.
